Eton has spent nearly a century proving that a shirt can be both a daily essential and a piece of serious craft. Founded in 1928 in Gånghester, in Sweden’s textile heartland, the company began when Annie Pettersson started sewing at home. What began as a small workshop became a shirt specialist, and after a 1948 journey through England the family returned with a name taken from the town of Eton. The headquarters remain in Gånghester. The founding standard has not changed: never hand over a shirt until you are completely satisfied with it.

That standard is visible in the construction. Each Eton shirt is assembled from around forty-five separate parts and finished with some twelve thousand stitches. Collars are engineered, not merely attached. Plackets sit flat. Cuffs close cleanly. Seams are measured to a fraction of a millimetre. Fabrics are designed in-house and woven exclusively for Eton, typically from extra-long-staple cotton — including organic Supima – at leading Italian mills. Signature twill, crisp poplin, textured oxford and seasonal linen give different weights and surfaces, but they share the same aim: a cloth that feels fine on first wear and still looks composed years later.

Eton is also known for making fine cotton practical. In 1992 the house introduced a crease-resistant 100 per cent cotton shirt after work with Swiss finishing specialists. The treatment does not turn the cloth into a synthetic. It steadies the fibre so a shirt stays smoother through a working day, travels better, and asks less of the iron. For Eton, durability is the first sustainability claim: a well-made shirt that is worn for a decade is a better object than a cheaper one replaced every season.

The range at Matt La Moda reflects that full wardrobe, not a single office uniform. Classic dress shirts in white, blue, pink and navy sit beside Bengal and pencil stripes, micro-checks and the house’s more playful prints – flora, fauna, geometric motifs and seasonal story prints that have become an Eton signature. Cutaway and wide-spread collars suit a tie and a tailored jacket; button-down and more relaxed shapes work open at the neck with knitwear or unstructured tailoring. Contemporary and slimmer fits cover different builds without forcing one silhouette on every customer. Around the shirts sit the pieces that complete the look: silk ties and bow ties, printed pocket squares, polos, resort shirts and the occasional cap – the same design language carried into accessories.
